Slovak PM Fico says he wants to try to form government

Slovak leftist Prime Minister Robert Fico said Sunday he would try to form a new cabinet despite election results showing centre-right opposition parties had won a majority in parliament.

Fico said his SMER party, which came in first with 35 percent of the votes at Saturday’s general election, had been successful and he would try to form a two-party ruling coalition.

“This is a number that gives us the right to accept a mandate from the president to form a cabinet,” he told a news conference. “We are ready for that. It is tough to predict what comes next.”

Political analysts have said the opposition parties would likely stick to their promises not to work with Fico, making the option of a centre-right cabinet much more likely. Fico said he was ready for an opposition role as well if he fails to form a government.
