Croatian presidential election goes to runoff: first official results

Ivo Josipovic of Croatia’s main opposition Social Democratic Party and independent candidate Zagreb mayor Milan Bandic will contest a presidential election runoff, according to the first official results released by the state-run electoral commission on Monday.

The first official results showed that Josipovic took 32.44 percent of the vote, and Bandic 14.84 percent. Since neither of them garnered the 50-percent support required for an outright victory, they will face each other in the runoff.

The runoff vote will be held on Jan. 10, 2010.

The incumbent President Stjepe Mesic will step down in February after serving the maximum two five-year terms.

The presidential vote is the fifth since Croatia declared independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991.
