Romanian leftists want re-run of presidential vote

Romania’s Social Democrats will ask for a re-run of Sunday’s presidential runoff vote, narrowly won by incumbent Traian Basescu, as part of a complaint that the vote was marred by fraud, a senior party member said on Tuesday.

“We are asking … for the annulment of the second election round and a repeat of the election, as law requires,” senior party member Liviu Dragnea told reporters.

According to law, the Constitutional Court can invalidate results in a constituency or at nationwide level. It can also ask for a repeat of the election process if polls are marred by fraud that is believed large enough to have distorted the outcome.
