Referendum voting ends on St. Vincent and the Grenadines

The polls have now closed in St. Vincent and the Grenadines where Vincentians Wednesday voted on a new constitution.

The referendum asked Vincentians to determine whether or not to keep the current constitution or to switch to a new one, which would essentially change the country into the region’s fourth republic, by replacing the British Queen as head of state.

Both the governing Unity Labour Party and the opposition New Democratic Party agree on that point but have differed on others.

However the opposition has campaigned against the proposed constitution claiming it does not sufficiently reduce the powers of the Prime Minister.

The results should be known later Wednesday evening.
