Arab League to observe Mauritanian presidential vote


The Arab League has sent a team to observe the 18 July presidential election in Mauritania.

“We’ve come to Mauritania as part of an observation mission aimed at ensuring that the 18 July presidential election in Mauritania takes place smoothly,” declared the head of the Arab League observer mission, Deputy Secreta ry General, Chedly Nefty.

The mission, among other tasks, will seek to get the feel of preparations on the ground.

Nefty said the presence of international observer missions in Mauritania “shows how much the authorities want this election to be fair and free,” he said.

Nine candidates are vying for the vote of Mauritanians in the presidential poll slated for next Saturday.
