James Longley producing Iran elections doc

Oscar-nominated documentary director James Longley has begun production in Tehran on a documentary look at the turmoil surrounding the 10th Iranian presidential elections.

Longley, founder of US production company Daylight Factory, was reportedly arrested earlier this week while interviewing a couple on the street in Tehran, near the city’s Interior Ministry, but has since been released. He is also filming in Tabriz, the holy city of Qom and Qazvin.

The American director’s Iraq In Fragments received three jury awards at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. His doc Sari’s Mother was also nominated for an Oscar, for Best Documentary Short, and premiered at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival.

Iran has seen mass protests and bloodshed since incumbent Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s controversial election win on June 12.

  1. Please update your post; James is not making a documentary about the election in Iran. For more information (and details about the misinformation being spread about him by the state-run PressTV) see this interview: http://www.takepart.com/blog/2009/06/19/from-iran-qa-with-documentary-filmmaker-james-longley/
