Will Iran’s presidential election be rigged?

A best-selling author and former political consultant to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Friday’s election in Iran really means nothing because the real power remains in the hands of radical Islamic clerics.

The eyes of the world will clearly be on Iran, as current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad faces three challengers, one the former Commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and two so-called reformers.

Joel Rosenberg is the author of Inside the Revolution: How the Followers of Jihad, Jefferson, and Jesus are Battling to Dominate the Middle East and Transform the World. The Messianic Jewish believer says the Iranian election will be rigged.

“If the current President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is re-elected, what that means is the Supreme Leader of Iran, the Ayatollah Khamenei, has decided that Ahmadinejad represents effectively the voice of the Islamic revolution,” he explains.

Joel RosenbergRosenberg says he knows what would happen if the people had their say. “Right now I think you’d still have to say that Ahmadinejad is the front-runner,” he admits. “But if it were a true election, if it was truly the will of the people, Ahmadinejad would get swamped, he’d be run out of office rapidly because the country can’t stand him.”

It will be interesting to see if Ahmadinejad still has the confidence of the radical Muslims who really run Iran, Rosenberg concludes.
