Nigeria: Thugs Attack Election Petition Tribunal

An irate mob yesterday attacked the Nasarawa State Magistrate Court in Akwanga which also serves as temporary venue of the local government election petition tribunal for the zone.

The mob was said to have attacked the court a few minutes to 9:00 am when the tribunal was about to hear the case between the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) chairmanship aspirant in the November 1st local government election in the state, Dameshi Luka and the chairman of Akwanga Local Government Area and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the said election, Stanley Buba.

The rampaging mob broke down all windows of the court in an attempt to beat up members of the tribunal headed by Justice Esther Daku before they were dispersed by the police.

The police, Daily Trust learnt, had to use teargas to dislodge the mob when the situation was believed to be getting out of hand. Our correspondent counted about seven canisters of teargas at the tribunal venue when he visited the area yesterday. The tribunal chairman and secretary declined comment on the matter, asking journalists “to observe and report.” The DPO in charge of Akwanga, Victor Chilaka also declined comment, referring newsmen to the police public relations officer of the Nasarawa State command, Richard Akoji (ASP).
